Chery to race in 2010 Dakar Rally
Chery Auto will become the first independent Chinese vehicle brand to participate in the Dakar Rally.
The company will compete in two Rely X5 sport utility vehicles, with a Rely H5 providing technical back-up and support.
Rely is one of the new high-end brands in the Chery stable, forming part of the company’s multi-brand strategy that was introduced at the beginning of 2009.
The Dakar Rally starts on January 1 and ends on January 17, in Buenos Aires, in Argentina.
It covers more than 9 000 km of extreme desert conditions between Argentina and Chile, in South America.
Four of the 14 legs of the race will run through the Atacama desert.
There will also be two crossings of the Andes at altitudes of about 4 700 m above sea level.
Chery Group CEO Yin Tongyue says the company views the Dakar as the ideal opportunity to showcase its brand on a worldwide stage.
“The upcoming Dakar Rally will allow Chery to test the waters, so to speak, and to learn as much as possible from the experience that will ultimately lead to improved products.”
