Tras el pequeño problema mecánico de ayer, Carlos Sainz ha puesto toda la carne en el asador y ha asegurado la segunda victoria de etapa para Volkswagen, la primera con el RT3. El madrileño ha querido demostrar a todos que él es el jefe de filas y el favorito para la carrera. La batalla entre los pilotos del equipo Volkswagen ha servido a la firma germana para colocar a sus cuatro coches en las primeras posiciones. En la otra carrera, la de los pilotos no oficiales, Boris Gadasin es cuarto a 5′17″ de Sainz. Mark Miller ha recuperado diez posiciones en la etapa de hoy y ya es séptimo. Bogdan Novitsky escolta a su compañero de equipo en G-Force a solo 21″.

Dominio Total de Kamaz en la categoría de camiones. Tres mastodontes de la factoría rusa lideran la clasificación comandados por el “Zar” Chagin. La epata se la ha adjudicado Nikolaev seguido de Kabirov y el “Zar”. Los alemanes Echter-Ruf-Balleis preceden a Loprais en el top five.

Mala suerte para el equipo De Rooy donde Pep Vila sufrió en la etapa de ayer por un incidente tras el CP1. Peor fortuna tuvo el belga Hugo Duisters que se quedó sin dirección y llegó muy tarde al bivouac, ambos penalizaron dos horas y se les adjudicó el tiempo máximo de la etapa. Con todo han finalizado noveno y octavo respectivamente.

El equipo Epsilon está en la duodécima posición, muy en la línea de David Oliveras, cuya mejor baza es la regularidad. A poco que los demás vayan cayendo el subirá peldaños en al general.

Una de las llegadas más espectaculares de este Dakar 2010 se produjo en la etapa Antofagasta – Iquique, entre el ruso Vladimir Chagin en un Kamaz y el americano Robby Gordon en un Hummer:

Aunque relegado en la general, Marc Coma aprovecha esta última especial en Chile, de 238 km, para sumar un triunfo más a su palmarés, con esta 3ª victoria de especial en el Dakar 2010. Al piloto catalán, con su KTM, le siguen Frétigné y Rodrigues. Despres sigue cómodo líder de la general. Sobre cuatro ruedas, el duelo Sainz-Al Attiyah prometía ser emocionante. Al final el español se ha impuesto logrando estrenarse como ganador de etapa este año y aumentado ligeramente la distancia en la clasificación. En camiones, Vladimir Chagin bate el récord absoluto de victorias de etapa en el Dakar, al ganar su 55ª.

En Copiapó, Chaleco se ha adjudicado su segunda etapa chilena en lo que va de Dakar, encontrando así un puesto en el podio provisional del rally, donde le acompaña desde hoy Ullevalseter. Ambos se sitúan, eso sí, a una distancia considerable del líder, el francés Cyril Despres. También en la categoría de coches se ha impuesto un piloto que no conoce límites: el francés Stéphane Peterhansel, 4º en la clasificación general a más de dos horas de Sainz, se ha adjudicado, ni más ni menos, que su 54ª victoria de etapa En la categoría de camiones, Vladimir Chagin ha sido el más rápido, haciéndose -como Peter- con su 54ª victoria en el Dakar.

Antes de la jornada de descanso, que el Dakar pasará en Antofagasta, a orillas del Pacífico, Cyril Despres se adjudica una etapa en la que Marc Coma vuelve a convertirse en su primer rival en la clasificación general. En coches, la etapa del día, ganada por Al-Attiyah, ha permitido a los BMW X3 de Guerlain Chicherit y de Stéphane Peterhansel posicionarse respectivamente en la cuarta y quinta posición de la clasificación general. Vladimir Chagin, con una sexta victoria de siete en la presente edición, confirma su posición de líder de la carrera.

Siete de las ocho últimas ediciones del Dakar las ha vencido un piloto Kamaz, lo que muestra la capacidad de los rusos de acaparar títulos. Sin embargo, en ocasiones el exceso de confianza se convierte en su punto débil.

Vladimir Chagin, un maestro del volante, no duda en explotar al máximo su camión. Pero sus ganas de velocidad y de espectáculo lo han llevado, algunas veces, a cometer fallos. Este año, el Zar confía en el destino para ganar un sexto título con el que igualaría el palmarés de Karel Loprais. En esta ocasión, en el asiento de la derecha se encuentra un navegante que ya ha participado en dos de los títulos de Chagin: la primera victoria (2000) y la última (2006). Se trata de Semen Yakubov, team manager de Kamaz, que vuelve a la cabina para participar en la lucha por el éxito.

Los tres camiones azules inscritos están listos para vivir a fondo los 9.000 km del exigente recorrido que les espera. Pero sobre todo, deberán contener las intenciones de Ales Loprais, quien está dispuesto a enfrentarse a los Kamaz tras, aparentemente, solucionar los frecuentes problemas técnicos de su camión Tatra vividos en la edición de 2009. Del mismo modo, el sobrino de Karel, tercero en el Silk Way, también podría sacar provecho del particular contexto que se presenta este año: Gerard De Rooy, uno de los principales competidores de los rusos, está recuperándose de una lesión que se hizo en la última etapa del Silk Way, en Turkmenistán.

Bajo estas condiciones, varios outsiders pueden dar más de una sorpresa en la clasificación o inscribir sus nombres como vencedores de alguna de las etapas. También puede ser el momento de André de Azevedo (Tatra), o de Wulfert Van Ginkel (Ginaf) o incluso de la familia de Sugawara (Hino).

Real title collectors with seven out of the last eight editions of the Dakar won by one of theirs, the Kamaz drivers also tend to be vulnerable when over confident. A steering wheel virtuoso, Vladimir Chagin never hesitates to push his truck to its limits. But his appetite for speed and show sometimes drives him to commit mistakes. His track upsets probably cost him victory on three editions of the Dakar (2005, 2007, 2009).

The frequent hiccups on behalf of Chagin could even invite some to think that the number two position is maybe more favourable in the Kamaz structure! Firdaus Kabirov, who made the best of that in 2005 and in 2009 indeed remains on a success that fell from the truck of Chagin during the first edition of the Silk Way Rally last September. This year, the Tsar is hoping for a sign from destiny to clinch a sixth title that would allow him to equal Karel Loprais on the record list of the event. In the right seat will indeed be a navigator who took part in the first (2000) and last triumph (2006) of Chagin. Semen Yakubov, team manager of Kamaz, will indeed be back in the cabin, going for the win.

The three blue trucks registered won’t be clear from their own euphoria on the 9000 kms of the very demanding course that awaits them. They will mostly have to keep a close eye on the eagerness of Ales Loprais who intends on being a rival of Kamaz in Argentina and Chile. The repetitive mechanical upsets witnessed in 2009 in his Tatra truck seem to be sorted out.

The nephew of Karel, 3rd of the Silk Way could make the best of this year’s specific context: Gerard De Rooy who usually is the most serious rival for the Russians is indeed treating an injury that hit him in Turkmenistan during the last stage of the Silk Way. In such conditions, several outsiders could climb up the standings or add their names to the list of Dakar stage winners. It could be the hours of André de Azevedo (Tatra), or Wulfert Van Ginkel (Ginaf) or even of a member of the Sugawara family (Hino).

For the second consecutive year, the Dakar is welcomed in South America for a challenge of 9000 kilometres leading the riders and crews on the roads, the tracks, the mountains and the deserts of Argentina and Chile. From the 1st to the 17th of January, the competitors will fight it out on 14 stages: the loop to cover, anti-clockwise, will include a thorough visit of the Atacama Desert and its gigantic dunes. The white sand close to Fiambala or the grey one in the area of Nihuil will complete the spread of colours and the variety of difficulties all along the event.

At the end of the registration period, just a few days before the vehicles are welcomed to start the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean on a boat leaving Le Havre, the list of competitors confirms the status of the Dakar: with 184 bikes and quads, 138 cars and 50 trucks, the race remains the most attractive in the world. The expected media coverage, with footage broadcasted in 189 countries provides an outstanding relay for the constructors, the partners and the countries involved. At the moment of launching the celebrations of the bicentenary of its two nations, Argentina and Chile will actually be represented three times more than last year with competitors able to create a surprise.

It’s probably in the bike class, where the field has already been transformed by the new regulation adopted, that a “native” rider could triumph. The Aprilia factory believes just as much in the future of the 450cc bikes than in the chances of Chilean Francisco “Chaleco” Lopez. Concerning the French, David Frétigné, 3rd last year on a 450cc Yamaha, or David Casteu who will launch the Sherco brand in the 450cc adventure, intend on being rivals for the winners of the last four editions, Marc Coma and Cyril Despres who will be riding with a bridle limiting the performances of their big cylinder KTMs. The 450cc machines developed by Honda and BMW will also be candidates for a place in the Top 10.

In the car class, the new situation should provide an intense confrontation. With more and more performing vehicles and two top quality recruits, Stéphane Peterhansel and Nani Roma, the BMW X-Raid team will show up with fine arguments against the title holders. The Volkswagen armada including the likes of Giniel De Villiers, Carlos Sainz and Nasser Al Attiyah, are forced to excellence. In the truck race, the Kamaz of Kabirov and Chagin will also have to keep a close eye on ambitious Ales Loprais, in his Czech Tatra truck.
